Type:   Basket
Name:   Temple E, Southeast, context 318
Area:   Temple E, Southeast
Title:   Clayey deposit sloping E of wall
Category:   Deposit
Notebook:   1108
Context:   318
Date:   2014/05/16
Stratum:   Inclusions of lots of tiles, stones (coarse pebbles and cobbles, sub-rounded and angular), bones, and pottery (approximately 15%)
Description:   Top slope of the context is steep down to the E. The soil color is light brownish grey. The soil compaction is firm. The soil is very poorly sorted. It is clayey silt.
Notes:   We turn our attention to the clayey tile deposit that covers the top of the N-S wall and slopes steeply to the E. This layer has been partially visible since 24 April 2014 after the removal of the boulders in reddish soil above it. We begin removing this layer with small picks starting at the W and exposing the preserved top of the wall. We continue down the slope to the E, taking care to keep the stones in place as much as possible to get a clear picture of the extent of the wall collapse. The removal of this layer has revealed an extensive slope of the collapsed wall continuing on a moderate slope to approximately E114.30.
Four coins, 2014-129 and 2014-132 to 134 were found in the dry sieve. Pottery, bone, little glass, and some iron, including a buckle, was collected in this context.
This deposit seems to be the melting of the clayey coatings on the W face of wall 135 after the wall had collapsed. This layer is visible in the scarp to the N and might have continued along the entire length of the wall. Notes added 21/5/14, K.E.L.
