Description:   The context shape in plan is circular. The top break of the cut is sharp. The sides of the cut are vertical. The break at the base of the cut is gradual. The base of the cut is flat. Truncation: Cut 31 truncates two lower conjoined pits..
Notes:   The edge of the cut is uniform and level with the compact greyish brown dirt layer that was underneasth the topsoil. It was excavated so that the greyish-brown layer can be removed and to establish a date for the greyish-brown layer. The excavation proved problematic: this cutting truncated a lower cutting (or rather a pair of intersecting cuttings) and since the fill of the lower and upper cuttings was composed of loose, greyish-brown dirt, most of the lower deposits were removed as well. Excavation was halted to prevent wasting anymore of the easlier deposit. The result of all of this is that the cut (context 31) is irregularly shaped: from the lens to the conjectured depth of only the later cutting (approximately 0.32m) the cutting is roughly circular. At this point, a third of the bottom of the cut on the east side is preserved: the dirt is hard and compact, the same as the dirt of the lens. The SW and NW thirds of the pit are further excavated to 0.49m below the lens. The true sides of the lower deposits were not found, but artificially shaped to conform to the sides of the upper cutting. The lower cuts will be reported when their corresponding interfaces are found. We determined that the upper cut truncates the lower cuts because the two lower one's coverge at an approximately right angle forming a corner of compact dirt at the center of the excavated pit.
