Name:   Temple E, Southeast, context 323
Area:   Temple E, Southeast
Title:   Wall fall debris
Category:   Deposit
Notebook:   1108
Context:   323
Date:   2014/05/16, 2014/05/19
Stratum:   Inclusions of stones (sub-rounded cobbbles), large tile fragments, pottery, and bone (approximately 30%)
Description:   Top slope of the context is moderate down to the E. The soil color is dark reddish brown. The soil compaction is soft. The soil is very poorly sorted. It is sandy silt.
Notes:   The debris of the wall collapse is now exposed fully and slopes to the E to a point at E 114.30. We begin to remove this debris as context 323. We excavate with small picks from the exposed preserved top of the wall moving in passes down the slope. We are careful to excavate in passes in order to notice if there are lenses of larger stones underneath this first layer of debris. The first layer of soft earth full of stones and tiles is removed to reveal a second lense with even larger stones underneath. We continue removing this first lense of debris with small picks moving E down the slope. Most of the debris in this first lense consistend of sub-rounded cobbles and large tile fragments.
Three coins (2014-137, 2014-138, and 2014-140) were found in the dry sieve. A pierced, circular steatitie disc was found during excavation. Pottery, bone, glass, iron and two pieces of plaster were removed in this context.
A sheet of metal was discovered to be a coin after cleaning (2014-156). The presence of fragments of flat tiles in this layer indicates their original use as spacers in the construction of the wall. Roof tiles and floor tiles were found under the wall debris and removed as context 368. Notes added 21/5/14, K.E.L.
