Name:   Temple E, Southeast, context 350
Area:   Temple E, Southeast
Title:   Clay melt from wall
Category:   Deposit
Notebook:   1108
Context:   350
Date:   2014/05/20
Stratum:   Soil ranges from medium to dark in color modifier. Slope of context varies from moderate to slight. Inclusions of tiles, stones (sub-rounded coarse pebbles and cobbles, some angular boulders), pottery, and bone (approximately 40%)
Description:   Top slope of the context is moderate down to the E. The soil color is dark reddish brown. The soil compaction is soft. The soil is very poorly sorted. It is clayey silt.
Notes:   After removing the layer of boulders and wall fall debris (context 339) we have exposed a large clayey deposit in which there is continued wall debris. This layer represents the melting of the clay coating of the E face of the wall. Several large boulders are included in this layer as they sunk into the clayey mass when the wall collapsed. We begin to remove this clayey deposit with small picks from the SE corner moving NW up the slope. We remove several large boulders and flat tiles as the continuation of the collapse of the wall. The removal of this layer reveals another clayey deposit underneath, but this one has large roof tiles as inclusions. This is what we had expected to find as some sort of roof collapse / disintegration must have preceded the wall collapse to allow water to seep into and down the wall to cause the melting of the clayey exterior coating.
Five coins were found in the excavation (2014-153, 2014-155, 2014-157) and in the dry sieve (2014-151, 2014-154) of this context. Much pottery and some bone/shell, iron, glass, and a bronze fragment were collected in this context. Several interesting stones were removed which likely had been re-used as building materials for this wall. One is a cylindrical piece of marble measuring 0.23 m. tall with a diameter of 0.215 m. that has a rectangular cutting in the top measuring 0.09 by 0.06 m. another is marble fragment preserving an architectural moulding measuring 0.339 by 0.078 by 0.113 m. There was also a rather large piece of dark stone revetment found measuring 0.223 by 0.11 by 0.027 m. Finally, there was a fragment of sculpted marble, perhaps showing drapery, with some pebbly mortar adhering to its surface. This piece, measuring 0.247 by 0.112 by 0.049 m., was sent to the museum.
