Name:   Temple E, Southeast, context 368

Title:   Tile debris under wall collapse
Category:   Deposit
Notebook:   1108
Context:   368
Date:   2014/05/21; 2014/05/22
Stratum:   Inclusions of large fragments of roof and floor tiles, pottery, and bone (approximately 15%)
Description:   Top slope of the context is level. The soil color is light greyish brown. The soil compaction is firm. The soil is very poorly sorted. It is clayey silt.
Notes:   We have now exposed the deposit full of roof and floor tiles across the area and have noted the presence of a floor underneath this layer. WE begin removing this context with small picks exposing the clay-packed floor surface underneath and collecting the tiles for washing and joining. While there are some roof tiles in this context it does not look like a significant amount of the original roofing system is preserved; therefore, it is likely that many of the tiles were removed soon after they fell for re-use as building material elsewhere. We also note that this layer seems to continue to the S, past the area where we had been working and into the space of room E that was excavated in 1993 (NB 859). We leave a martyr between our area and that dug in 1993 for the meantime to prevent contamination. It is also discovered in the removal of this context that the floor surface continues underneath the lowest course of wall 135; therefore wall 135 was constructed after this floor surface in order to subdivide rooms E and F of Unit 2.
One coin (2014-160) was found in the dry sieve. Much pottery and bone/shell, as well as some iron and glass was collected in this context. A ring was found in this context after sweeping at 114.62 E 1076.78 N 84.92 H and was sent to the museum.
