Title:   Leveling fill below Early Modern Road E of EM Wall
Category:   Deposit
Notebook:   1108
Context:   38
Date:   2014/04/10
Stratum:   Stones, large amounts of tile. 20%?
Description:   The soil color is dark brownish black. The soil compaction is hard. The soil is well sorted. It is sandy silt.
Notes:   Following the excavation of the Ottoman road on 9/4/14 in the unexcavated baulk W. of room 5 and NW of the Frankish church's narthex in unit 2, we began excavating the leveling fills beneath it, identified as such by the method of construction and the large amounts of debris within. Small finds included an iron trowel. Coin 2014-09 was found within 50cm of the EM wall and foundation cut at TESE 11/15. The leveling fill was excavated on the W. side only at first as the soil there appeared more black than the redder soil further eastwards. Excavations on the reddish fill occurred shortly thereafter (TESE 42). Presence of trowel beneath the N/S EM road (TESE 24) possibly (though certainly not conclusively) suggests this was purpose built at the same time as the road. However, roof tiles suggest a roof collapse that solidified over time. Although pottery dates to ca. 1700, a deposit (TESE 46) with 18th c. pottery suggests a similar date for this context as well.
