Description:   The soil color is dark reddish brown. The soil compaction is hard. The soil is well sorted. It is sandy silt.
Notes:   As with TESE 38, this represents a leveling fill beneath the Ottoman village road (TESE 24) excavated 10/4/14 W. of room 5 and NW of the Frankish church in unit 2. This was excaated as a separate context from TESE 38 because the color was reddish in comparison to the fill (TESE 38) closer to the wall at TESE 11/15. This discoloration could be a function of differing distances from the wall, with the soil in the middle of the N/S road being more compacted, the red fill layer being less compacted, and the layer closest to the wall the most affected by later tree root action. Tree roots have thoroughly infiltrated this whole area, as evidenced by excavations at TESE 48. After the removal of this fill and the pit at TESE 46, we can now remove the compacted clay layer that sits directly above the so-called 'sterile' red layer. Although pottery dates to ca. 1700, a deposit (TESE 46) with 18th c. pottery suggests a similar date for this context as well.
