Title:   Undisturbed fill of child grave N of church nave
Category:   Deposit
Notebook:   1108
Context:   459
Date:   2014/06/05
Stratum:   15% lumps of clay, glass, eggshell coin
Description:   Top slope of the context is level. The soil color is dark reddish brown. The soil compaction is soft. The soil is well sorted. It is clayey silt.
Notes:   We switched from context 454 to the present context when changes in both soil color and compaction were perceived. The soil of deposit 459 is both darker and harder than the soil of 454 above it. In retrospect we realized that soil of 454 was softer and had a composition owing likely to bioturbation and water action and animal activity. To recap on all of the contexts for this grave: 444 is initial fill, 449 is tile capping, 454 - soft disturbed earth within grave, 459 is undisturbed. Unless there is another series of sifts in the soil quality/composition, we expect to excavate this context to the bottom of the grave cutting. One of the more unusual inclusions that we found in the fill of this context was eggshell.
A coin came up E123.46, N1076.18, H84.43 and was located on her hip.
Aside from the egghell, symbolizing rebirth (as Guy says), and the two coins (one from this context, and the other from the disturbed fill 454) , there were no grave goods. This grave was later covered by variou levels of fill (namely 437) which provided/maintained access to Room 7 (Unit 2) from the corridor.
