Collection:   Corinth
Type:   Basket
Name:   Temple E, Southeast, context 46
Area:   Temple E, Southeast
Context Type:   deposit
Title:   Soft fill below Early Modern Road
Category:   Deposit
Notebook:   1108
Context:   46
Date:   2014/04/10
Stratum:   Large field stones, small amounts of pottery, large tile pieces.
Description:   The soil color is dark brownish black. The soil compaction is loose. The soil is well sorted. It is sandy silt.
Notes:   This is a fill layer excavated under the road distinct from the black fill layer (TESE 38), which was laid on top of it, and what is beneath it (TESE 48), as the soil is darker and looser from these other elements. It is on the south side of the unexcavated baulk W. of room 5 and NW of the Frankish church's narthex in unit 2, adjacent to the EM wall (TESE 11/15). We decided to sieve 100% to determine if this was a natural or man-made deposit. Sieve revealed one coin and some pot sherds. This seems more likely to have originally been dug as a result of animal activity and filled over time before the fill layer was deposited on top in preparation for the road. There is no evidence of deliberate human use and no practical reason to explain it through human agency.
