| Notes: | Context 47 is a plaster or cement floor bedding that was visibile prior to cleaning (contet 7) because it was previously excavated during the 1990 field season (see NB 835, Basket 46, pp. 83-4, Basket 42, pp. 75-6), when it was revealed to extend across the E area of the nave. Work proceeded from the N by trowel to remove the cement, which was found to extend to the S edge of the NW pier base (Structure 23). Fragments of glass and faced cement were collected. The floor bedding was not entirely continous and must have been disturbed. The context was closed after all of the cement within the excavation area was removed, but more of this floor bedding extends to the E. Later notes: Review of the previous work in the area shows that above the cement floor bedding found E of the pier base was a fill with fragments of colored marble and tile (NB 834, Basket 46, pp. 83-4). The fill just S of the fallen columns (NB 835, Basket 42, pp.75-6) yielded marble attached to cement, and so prompted the excavators to describe a cement floor bedding supporting a marble paved floor. Discovery of cement sloping up to the narthex cross wall (NB 835, Basket 44, pp. 80-1) led the excavators to suggest that this floor was associated with the later threshold (Structure 22), which is supported by the elevations of these contexts (NB 835, Plan 20, p. 89). Though disturbed, this context demonstrates that the cement floor bedding extended under the fallen columns.
