Stratum:   large tiles (50%)
Description:   Top slope of the context is level. The soil color is dark greenish brown. The soil compaction is hard. The soil is poorly sorted. It is silty clay.
Notes:   This fill was left in the cut and the surrounding areas excavated first. It seems, though, that this fill slightly overlays the surrounding sediment, although it is harder. The fill contains many large tile fragments, some nearly intact. All together, 78 tile fragments weighing 30kg were excavated from this context. The soil of the fill is almost entirely composed of clay. After removing a large number of tiles, clay deposits continue with few inclusions and the context was continued. At this time, it is hypothesized that the deposit may be a construction dump assoicated with one of the phases of the area. As we go deeper, soil hue changes (darker brown) and the appearance of ash and charcoal appear. This is probably the beginning of a new deposit. Before investigating further, all clay was removed. During this process, part of a wall was discovered in the west side of the pit, more than likely part of the wall extending to the north at a lower elevation. The fill also contained some bone towards the bottom, however it is more than likely intrusive from the surrounding fill.
