Description:   Top slope of the context is moderate down to the E. The soil color is light brownish brown. The soil compaction is soft. The soil is poorly sorted. It is silty sand.
Notes:   This is the fill of the foundation trench of wall 156. We are digging it to ascertain the date of the construction of this wall.
This foundation trench appears to be cut by the later pit -- the large E-W pit defined by cut 408. Therefore, we were debating previously as to whether this pit had been related to the construction of wall 156 -- and this now appears not to be true. Rather, this pit scalloped off the top of the foundation trench and its true elevation. The original level from which it was dug should be found in the W section.
It also shows that the building on the N of the corridor postdates the church, as it was constructed on a higher level/surface than the church (whose foundation trench has not been found).
In looking for the continuation of the foundation trench to the W of where wall 157 abuts wall 156, we went through a bit of the suface level underneath (context 503). We stop digging the foundation trench fill when our pickman believed he had reached its limit, but further scraping has since revealed that there is likely a second lens of foundation trench fill to be excavated.
