Title:   Concentration of flat tiles on church floor
Category:   Deposit
Notebook:   1108
Context:   49
Date:   2014/04/10
Stratum:   Inclusions: 50% total; ceramic (mostly roof tiles).
Description:   The soil color is dark reddish brown. The soil compaction is firm. The soil is moderately sorted. It is sandy silt.
Notes:   Context is a concentration of flat, horizontally oriented roof tiles uncovered beneath the deposit under the fallen columns (context 14). Approximately 4-5 layers of roof tiles were excavated, with the upper layers horizontally arranged but the lower levels oriented diagonally. This suggests that the roof tiles were used in a levelling fill. Work proceeded from N to S by trowel. Inclusions of frequent ceramic roof tiles characterized this deposit. These were collected along with a few bones.
Later notes: This context was most likely levelling fill for the cement floor bedding (context 47), since it appears to be just under the elevation of the floor bedding. Tile is visible beneath the cement floor bedding E of the excavation area, which suggests that tile was elsewhere used in levelling fill.
