Title:   Cleaning of robbing trench scarp
Category:   Deposit
Notebook:   1108
Context:   524
Date:   2014/06/12
Stratum:   45%: fine-coarse angular and subrounded pebbles, cement chunks, cobbles.
Description:   Top slope of the context is uneven. The soil color is dark reddish grey. The soil compaction is loose. The soil is poorly sorted. It is sandy silt.
Notes:   Deposit context 524 is a dark fill running along the edge of the partially robbed out N wall of the church nave (structure context 20). The robbing trench was identified and excavated in the 1993 campaign and recorded in NB 835 (B22). This fill was disturbed by the pits identified and excavated by M. Condell and M. Beeler in the first session of the 2014 season (dep 28, cut 45; dep 32, cut 44). As Thanassis procedes trying to identify the boundaries of the context he begins to scrape back the S scarp of the robbing trench. It soon becomes clear that material from several different context has been commingled such that this context sheet records a cleaning operation rather than a deposit context proper. Thanassis was able to identify the boundaries of a pit fill that likely corresponds to the underdug fill of dep. Context 32, that filled cut 44. He was also able to identify an infant/toddler burial partially truncated by the robbing trench. This burial and its fill are directly below the pit identified in the first session. Unfortunately, any of the bones of a vertebral column fell out of the scarp. These were recovered and mixed with the rest of the bone collected from this exploratory investigation. A gilded bronze pendant (MF-2014-56) was also recovered from this operation at 124.69E, 1074.57N; 84.81 elevation with gold and silver decoration that likely originated in the fill of the toddler burial.
