Stratum:   Inclusions: 40% total; ceramic; stone (pebble to cobble, angular and irregular); cement; bone; metal; glass.
Description:   The soil color is dark reddish brown. The soil compaction is firm. The soil is poorly sorted. It is sandy silt.
Notes:   Context 52 is a fill under floor in NW quadrdant of church nave. Work proceeded from NE by small pick at a depth of 5-8cm by Tasos. Inclusions of bone were infrequent and concentrated in NW corner by pit (context 32). In the area W of the NW pier base (context 23), architectural material was collected, including: plainted plaster with an embedded blue pebble, a fragment of pebble mosaic with blue and yellow pebbles, marble fragments including one embedded in a fragment of plaster. Several other fragments of unfaced cement were also discovered but not collected from this area. Once coin (2014-15) was found in the sieve and came from the E area of this context, while another coin (2014-16) was found in the NW area. Several other metal objects were also collected, including a bronze object and 3 iron nails. Work ceased when a softer, redder deposit was uncovered in the W area by the threshold (context 61).
Later notes: The presence of fragments of flooring may suggest that this context is not a levelling fill for the floor comprised of these mosaic flooring, but rather for a later floor.
