Context:   544
Date:   2014/06/16
Stratum:   30% small-medium subangular pebbles; ceramic sherds
Description:   Top slope of the context is slight down to the S. The soil color is light brownish brown. The soil compaction is soft. The soil is poorly sorted. It is silty sand.
Notes:   This the remaining fill of a robbing trench of wall 556 at the S side of Unit 2, Room 2. We opened separate contexts for the E and W portions of this robbing trench because they are separated by a line of stones of various sizes that runs N-S. This context is the E portion of the robbing trench. The width of the robbing trench matches the lowest course of the extant wall (556), while the extant wall's upper courses are narrower. This difference in widths suggests that the upper courses were added at some later time to the initial bottom course.
As compared with the vertical cut of the robbing trench in its W portion (context 544), the cut of the robbing trench in its E portion slopes gradually.
After the removal of this remaining robbing trench fill we will continue to excavate floor layers in this room in hopes of locating a pit cut at the center of this room, as well as cuts for foundation trenches for the room's walls.
The robbing trench was previously investigatd in 1991 when it was dated to the Turkish period (NB 834 B99). Our context was dated to the late 13th based on pottery, but this probably reflects the redeposited Frankish material that made up the robbing trench fill. It was cut from Turkish levels and this gives it its proper date.
