Title:   Fill of robbing trench of wall 558, W portion
Category:   Deposit
Notebook:   1108
Context:   545
Date:   2014/06/16
Stratum:   30% small-medium subangular pebbles, ceramic sherds
Description:   Top slope of the context is slight down to the S. The soil color is light brownish brown. The soil compaction is soft. The soil is poorly sorted. It is sandy silt.
Notes:   This is the remains of the robbing trench of S wall 558, at its W portion, in Unit 2, Room 2, that was only partially dug in the 1991 season. The E portion of the remaining robbing trench fill was excavated separately as context 544. The wall's robbing trench is more vertical in the W portion of its cut than in the E portion, where it slopes gradually. Overall, the robbing trench at the W side of the room is cut deeper than the robbing trench along the S side of the room, hence two bottom elevations: 84.75 and 84.91.
See context 543, excavation notes, for where/why we plan to excavate next.
NB 847 B 24 and 25 are the baskets for the fill of this robbing trench, dug in 1991. The original excavators dated this robbing activity to the Turkish period based upon stratigraphy, though our pottery date of mid 13th century only reflects the redeposited Frankish material of the robbing trench fill.
