Corinth Basket: Temple E, Southeast, context 57
Collection:   Corinth
Type:   Basket
Name:   Temple E, Southeast, context 57
Area:   Temple E, Southeast
Title:   Fill of trench west of wall 51
Category:   Deposit
Notebook:   1108
Context:   57
Date:   2014/04/11
Stratum:   10% inclusions, mostly angular pebbles, some ceramic fragments, rare cobbles
Description:   Top slope of the context is uneven. The soil color is dark yellowish brown. The soil compaction is soft. The soil is poorly sorted. It is sandy silt.
Notes:   Deposit 57 cuts into deposit 36. We considered whether the line separating the two contexts was created by runoff from a roof over Room A, causing a separation of the road, but upon further investigation 57 didn't have the same well sorted cobbles of the road, so we decided to excavate it separately. The previous excavators called it a robbing trench. The wall and trench was originally revealed by B. 37, NB 839, pg 101-2. The context was closed when workman noted soil changes.
Finds collected include bone (1 box), glass (1 bag), metal frags (1 bag), stones beads (1 bag).
Uneven slope: Since this deposit has been left exposed to the elements there is a slight slope to the north and to the south as the soil has erroded into the previously excavagted pits to the north and the south.
Later notes [19-4-14] JLL: On further consideration, 57 may well be associated w/ the road surface, deposit 36, either cut by runnoff as previously suggested or the difference in quality may be due to the fact that the edge of he road that runs right next to the wall is not as packed by traffic and may just not be as carefully laid.
Later notes [27-4-14] JLL: Again revisiting this fill, we have decided to equate it with the lower fill, 60, after all. 57 runs too deep to be associated only with the road 36. The pottery of the two fills are not substantially different, both Byzantine. But the coin 2014-17 found in 60 is solidly Frankish, so the ceramics found in both levels of fill are survivors and not useful in dating. That coin will provide the date for 57 and 60.
