Title:   Soft red fill along W end of church
Category:   Deposit
Notebook:   1108
Context:   61
Date:   2014/04/11
Stratum:   Inclusions: 40% total: patches of reddish clay; ceramic; stone (pebble to cobble); bone.
Description:   The soil color is dark brownish red. The soil compaction is soft. The soil is poorly sorted. It is silty sand.
Notes:   We took photos and opening elevations for the soft patch of reddish soil which Tasos encountered as he moved W towards the church threshold (Structure 22) as he dug Context 52. Based on the shape, softness of the soil, and inclusions of bone near the surface (poss. Human?), we suspected that this might be a grave pit, and proceeded carefully. Tasos began cleaning the upper layer of soil starting from the N end, and encountered large fragments of tile in horizontal orientation as well as some fragments of bone, and several small fragments of glass. As he moved to the W end of the context, he came down on a rectangular block of hewn stone, c. 3 cm below the surfact and oriented parallel to Wall 21/Structure 22 (W wall of church and threshold). He began here to encounter the darker, greyish brown soil observed near the threshold, and so pulled back to the E of the stone block. Moving S he encountered more tile in horizontal orientation, as well as large fragments of greenish marble, which seems to match the large triangular slab of marble to the S of our area, whose corner crosses into our S boundary. Tasos came down on a more compact, clayish, greenish soil which he suspects runs underneath the adjacent deposit to the S. At this point we are fairly certain this is not a grave, and may not in fact be a proper cut. The dry crust of soil we have encountered throughout the area from its exposure makes it difficult to distinguish, but we may be encountering the heterogeneity of the levelling fill rather than truly independent deposits. We closed 61 to decide how to proceed, ultimately determining to remove each distinctive patch of fill as separate contexts until we can more precisely determine the chronological relationships.
