Collection:   Corinth
Type:   Basket
Name:   Temple E, Southeast, context 697
Area:   Temple E, Southeast
Title:   Deposit in Center South Room 3
Category:   Deposit
Notebook:   1109
Context:   697
Date:   2015/05/07
Lot:   Lot 2015-018
Stratum:   10% inclusions, medium pebbles, sub Rounded Spherical.
Description:   Top slope of the context is slight down to the S. The soil color is light brownish yellow. The soil compaction is firm. The soil is moderately sorted. It is sandy silt.
Notes:   (KTT) In discussion with Guy and Panos we decided to take out the yellowish context underlying context 693. The context deepens as it proceeds South, below the bottom of level on 667. A good amount of pottery and larger fragments of bone are present in the context.
To the E we have defined the layer of reddish soil, which proceeds SW from the E pier. Sweeping and trowling will hopefully reveal whether this is an isolated strip of soil or whether it lies under context 697.
Troweling along the interface of the red and yellow contexts (yellow = 697) indicates that the red lies under the yellow. We are taking another pass to completely remove the context before proceeding.
Discussion with Guy and his initial reading of the pottery suggests that the layer dates to the 14th century and so must have been cut into context 667. This reverses out earlier understanding of the stratigraphy where we had initially thought Context 667 had been cut into 697. Hopefully the coins will confirm ths preliminary reading.
We will not be able to finish the second pass today, but we will have the workmen continue with it tomorrow morning.

(ERA) 7:28 Work resumed in the room continuing the removal of context 697. This second pass has taken Place N-S, following the inclination of the deposit. No new layer below has yet been revealed.
(KTT) While we have been able to trace the red soil going under the yellow layer (697), more of this context remains to be removed from the center. It becomes more and more clear that this is a fairly deep and extensive pit cut into the mmiddle of Room 3. We will take a 3rd pass to continue removing the yellow soil.
Work is proceeding slowly due to the need to sift. Nonetheless, due to the importance of the sieve in recovering pottery and especially coins, we will continue to sift the entire context regardless of the delay it causes.
In the NE side of the layer a small rodent hole was revealed.
In discussion with Panos and Larkin, we decided to change contexts for the third pass of the yellow layer. As it seems that we are coming to the bottom of it in some places, we hope that by changing the layer we will be better able to trace its boundaries in the plans and have better control over the settling of the layer.
Following discussion with Guy and Panos we have decided to clear out the backfill if the 90's pit on Monday Morning (* see below). The workmen will leave a "Martyr" between context 697 and the pit for its cleaning. Additionally Panos sees 697 extending uner a rubbly layer in the NW. In discussion with Guy we had initially been told to leave this intact, however, as 697 goes under it, we will take this out and dig the NW continuation of 697 as a separate context, though of course is should equal context 697.
The new context below 697 is 709 (697=709)
* This will be done to ensure no contamination occurs between the 90's fill and the present context.
11 May 2015
(KTT) We opened another new context at Panos's insistence for the bottom of this context (721) Thus 697=709=721
