Type:   Basket
Name:   Temple E, Southeast, context 825
Area:   Temple E, Southeast
Title:   Loose fill south area room 8
Category:   Deposit
Notebook:   1109
Context:   825
Date:   2015/06/03
Lot:   Lot 2015-038
Stratum:   70% angular and sub-rounded coarse pebbles. Abundant fragments of pottery, bones and stones (c. 7cm) tile fragments.
Description:   Top slope of the context is slight down to the N. The soil color is light brownish yellow. The soil compaction is soft. The soil is very poorly sorted. It is sandy silt.
Notes:   10:45: Excavation of the context started this deposit covers around 2/3 of room 8 and, at least on surface is characterised by a loose soil with a high density of bones and pottery that reminds to that of 786 and 796, although stratigraphically is a clearly distinctive context. Compaction of the context relatively higher to those above; it could be caused by its deeper position and the high amount of inclusions.
12:05: After removing c. 1/3 of the surface of the context it started to appear that this is the top layer of a new bothros that would stretch to room 7 as well. This room shows now the remains of a pit that stops at the wall that divides rooms 7 and 8. The limits of 825 seem to indicate that we are dealing with a new bothros sectioned by a wall, but the excavation is now at its first stages and more work in 825 is necessary before establishing defined limits to this new pit.
12:49: The excavation of the context reached the W wall of room 8. The working hypothesis of another bothros section by a wall seems to be reinforced by the relationship now exposed between the wall and 825. It is important also to notice that among the bones recovered we can find long fragments of ovicaprid (mandible) and bovid (long bones), some of them almost complete. This is just an impression based on materials recovered, not a detailed study of all faunal remains recovered from the context.
04-06-2015:
7:40: Work resumed in the context. Workmen removed most of the surface of the context. There are large quantities of material collected. There is now a large amount of soil that needs to be processed so excavation will be stopped for some short time.
While excavating this context a small area in the SE corner was revealed. If this soil is going to be removed or not is still a matter of debate. It seems to be the same soil but slightly harder, and actually presenting an L shape by the corner. If this constitutes a distinctive context or not is still a matter of debate.
8:05: After further exploration it seems that this more compacted soil is the edge in this area of the pit we are currently defining in the south side of the room.
10:42: Work continues in the context. The amount of soil removed is greatly slowing the process of excavation. The hypothesis of a new pit shared by room 7 and room 8 seems to be confirmed, but more soil awaits to be removed from this context.
05-06-2015:
10:07: Work was resumed at 07:30 while the top plan of 830 was taking also place. Work continues on the deposit. The general characteristics of the soil and the finds are the same, although the limits of the pit are now better defined. It is possible that this is the first of a series of throws in the bothros, although at least half of the surface of the context needs to be excavated. Around 9am there was some rain, but nothing heavy enough to compromise the reading of the soil. Work is taking place west to east and before the end of the day the relationship with the redefined 720 wall should be clarified.
08-06-2015:
8:22: Work continues removing 825, with a third pass starting from the west wall (structure 157). This third pass has revealed better another throw of the deposit, which seems to occupy the centre of the pit, and another context into which this is laid. It is not clear if this second one represents or not the bottom of the pit.
10:05: The deposit is completely excavated, exposing most of the surface of the cut and a smaller deposit to the west of the room (839).
