Category:   Structure
Notebook:   1109
Context:   830
Date:   2015/06/08
Description:   Structure materials: tiles, limestone, conglomerate. Material size: 0.30x.45 levelling course; 0.22x0.15 upper course. Material finish: roughly hewn. Material construction: random courses, levelling course. Material bonding: Mud lime. Features: uneven courses.
Notes:   11:27: After excavation of the fills of 823 and its counterpart in room 9. Kennedy suggested that former structure 720 should be divided into 2 different structures was first spotted by Athanasis earlier in the morning. Both sections of the wall do not bond, and further cleaning revealed that the south section (which will retain the number 720), presents a plaster facing on the point of contact with 830. Furthermore, the edge of 823 seems to be in contact with this surface separating 720 and 830.
Inspection of both structures from room 9 reveals also differences in the masonry styles of both structures. Blocks in 830 are larger and are laid down in more regular courses than the blocks in 720. Another difference is found on the bonding materials: 830 is a compacted soil that presents traces of lime is not present. In 720 the bonding material is looser and seem to be less consistent than that of 830.
Finally, between the bottom of the pit and the last course of stones a layer of tiles was laid. With regard to the measurements of ther structure, although this was not excavated the bottom elevation is provided based on the position of the lowest course of blocks, which is visible from room 9. The average width of the wall is 0.66 m, although it goes up to 0.77m in the area of the foundation of the threshold (the relationship between 830 and 811 is still not clear).
P.S.: 08-06-2015:
After research during the weekend it was discovered that former structure 720 was already recorded in 2014 as structure 155. This has caused some problems in the narrative that need to be addressed to avoid problems of interpretation. During the season of 2014 a structure was recorded as 155, E wall of room 8. When work took place in room 9 during 2015 season the same wall was re-recorded as 720. After it was assumed that this 155=720 structure was actually the result of two different walls one by the other. It was decided to keep the number of 720 for the south section and 830 for the north. Thus, 155 becomes obsolete and the former 720, that referred formely to both sections, is overwritten, and refers only to the south section.
