Type:   Basket
Name:   Temple E, Southeast, context 831
Area:   Temple E, Southeast
Title:   Circular fill atop well
Category:   Deposit
Notebook:   1109
Context:   831
Date:   2015/06/05
Stratum:   Soil was 70% inclusions, including potter, bones, cobbles, coarse pebbles, tiles, and bits of mortar. Sub-angular. Smaller sherds and pebbles on top, larger pieces and tile fragments lower down.
Description:   The soil color is light yellowish brown. The soil compaction is loose. The soil is moderately sorted. It is sandy silt.
Notes:   9:05 - starting excavation of circular fill above well. Distinguished from 829 (at same height) by having more inclusions, including small sherds. Hollow underneath 831 (opening of well). At same elevation to each side of 831 there are fewer inclusions, as seen in section created by Pit 733. 831 slopes outwards (i.e. seems to have been a pile).
Digging with trowel, scrapping. Some material falling into well, but making effort to avoid it.
Soil getting a bit looser lower down, under dry layer.
9:50- lots falling into well, which is collected by tarp.
As we move down the layer, fewer inclusions and larger.
Coin 535 - sieve; clipped?
Layer finished - well opening exposed.
Glass found
Next context - cleaning context 832 inside well opening. Some dirt from 831 fell into cleaning. But also possibly dirt from pit, and from other contexts.
LN 17/6/15: coin 535 is not a coin.
