Type:   Basket
Name:   Temple E, Southeast, context 839
Area:   Temple E, Southeast
Title:   Fill of pit in rooms 7-8 by structure 157
Category:   Deposit
Notebook:   1109
Context:   839
Date:   2015/06/08
Lot:   Lot 2015-037
Stratum:   15% subrounded spherical medium pebbles. Bones and pottery shards present, although in lower proportions than surrounding contexts. Tile fragments.
Description:   Top slope of the context is slight down to the E. The soil color is dark yellowish brown. The soil compaction is soft. The soil is moderately sorted. It is sandy silt.
Notes:   11:00: Excavation od the next throw of the fill started, the west limit of this deposit is the west wall (structure 157) and although the relationship between wall and context is under study no traces of it are visible on room 7, probably, if the trust the elevations, because it was excavated in the past.
12:00: The stratigraphy of the area has revealed itself much more complex than expected. 839 seems to be the fill not of the pit mentioned before but of a smaller one also shared by room 7 and located at the bottom of the larger pit. The sequence of cuts remains yet unclear.
12:30: As work progresses in the area it becomes clear that my hypothesis of the two pits was errouneus. The north edge of the oit shows it clearly cutting through two different types of soil: a lighter one that constitutes also the current surface of the north side of room 8, and a darker and redder one that also constitutes the bottom of the pit. For a reason that still needs furtther interpretration a pit was excavated in the area that was then made deeper in its north side but leaving a sharp break in the top of this second, deeper excavation. As well, this second pass revealed a higher proportion of animal bones, including the mandible of an equid.
09-06-2015:
7:50: Excavation resumed in the context. Work is revealing the lowest parts of the deposit. More importantly, excavation has revealed that the construction of structure 157 sectioned the pit in the same manner structure 830 cut through 823. This is not the case, however, of structure 156. Its lower course does not rest on the bottom of the pit and, since 157 and 156 are abutted rather than joined, the dating of the pit can indicate that 156 preceeded the division of the area in rooms.
8:13: Excavation of the deposit ends.
