Collection:   Corinth
Type:   Basket
Name:   Temple E, Southeast, context 886
Area:   Temple E, Southeast
Title:   Fill inside well, 2nd level, rm 9
Category:   Deposit
Notebook:   1109
Context:   886
Date:   2015/06/17
Lot:   Lot 2015-042
Stratum:   Ceramics, bones, charcoal; some large pieces of pots. Very small stones. 70%
Description:   The soil color is dark yellowish brown. The soil compaction is loose. The soil is poorly sorted. It is clayey silt.
Notes:   After examination at the pottery sheds of the first level of fill from the well in room 9, chronologically significant material was observed and we decided it might be worthwhile to see if similar material continues below, and if further digging will elucidate whether the well went through a period of later reuse after being abandoned for a period of time, and whether the possibly associated rocks above the well courses and the original well opening (cf. context 885) could be related to a reconstruction or renovation phase of the well structure.
During the initial pass of digging in the well, an almost complete or complete pot was found, for which provenance information was recorded (N. 1081.99, E. 131,29, H. 82.96). It was found in 2 main pieces, with the base unattached, and so was not collected for residue analysis and will be washed with the rest of the pottery.
The start of this context is arbitrary, as there was no clear end wo the fill context above.
Dirt is mostly loose, but with some chayey clumps that can be broken with hand. Some clayey lumps are very yellow, and a bit reddish. Clayey lumps seem to have mixed small inclusions, including tiny ceramic fragments (the size of a pencil tip).
Excavation continued the morning of 17/6; contexts were switched after taking a sample for flotation. The change in contexts, however, was arbitrary, and the soil matrix seems the same going further down.
