Corinth Basket: Temple E, Southeast, context 892
Collection:   Corinth
Type:   Basket
Name:   Temple E, Southeast, context 892
Area:   Temple E, Southeast
Title:   Compact deposit N and centre room 7
Category:   Deposit
Notebook:   1109
Context:   892
Date:   2015/06/17
Lot:   Lot 2015-040
Stratum:   70% spherical and tabular angular medium pebbles. Fragments of tile, shards and animal bones
Description:   Top slope of the context is level. The soil color is light greyish brown. The soil compaction is firm. The soil is very poorly sorted. It is sandy silt.
Notes:   11.45: This context comprises the surface of room 7 in its central and northern sections. Work started from S to N since it is the clearest boundary with the layer below.
13.00: Excavation of the layer continues. After some consideration it was decided to assign firm rather than soft to the compaction of the soil due to the presence of large fragments of artefacts, mostly very fragmented tiles.
18/06/2015:
07.37: Excavation resumed in the context. The soil and the proportion of inclusions remains constant, and only the first pass has taken place. Everything seems to indicate that this is going to be a large context.
9.15: Part of the bottom layer has been revealed. The boundary is very sharp, and the new soil is characterised by the total absence of stones and tiles.
11.15: A big storm has hitted the area of Corinth and forced to stop the work for the day. The amount of water that affected the site was very important and, although it was possible to collect all the loose soil from the excavation area before work was stopped, it will be necessary to wait until tomorrow to assess how the rain has affected the soil.
19/06/2015:
07.39: Although the rain continued sporadically all day and during, the night the excavation was resumed this morning. The composition of the soil and mainly the inclusions found in it are helping to finish the excavation of the area. Although the boundary between 892 and the surface below has shifted from sharp to clear due to the rain, it is still possible to remove the context without damaging the stratigraphic sequence.
10.48: Excavation of the context finished. Surface below seems to be more homogeneus in composition; boundaries between contexts are sharp. A rubble deposit south of 892 was given a different number (900) and it was decided to excavate it differently due to distinctive postdepositional processes (see notes 900 deposit).
