Context:   923
Date:   2016/05/06
Stratum:   The soil includes pottery, fine, medium pebbles, and human bone.
Description:   Top slope of the context is level. The soil color is dark yellowish brown. The soil compaction is firm. The soil is moderately sorted. It is silty clay.
Notes:   Coin 135 found in sieve.
This context appearted to be a fill layer beneath context 914, another fill layer, but Kostos believes there may be a grave outline. Thus far the material in the soil has been mostly bone, both human and animal. There has been very little pottery so far. A hoop earring (inventoried as MF-2016-28) similar to the half hoop earring from context 914 (MF-2016-24) was found in this level.
2016/05/09 - Skull fragments found in the west end of the context. A cut mark is being defined within the context. A second cut mark has been found on the north side which is likely from another burial, of which half was already excavated during the excavation of the robbing trench at Wall 20. Must check to see whether the burial was recongized.
Coin 136 was found in the sieve.
Kostos believes that the cut he is revealing in the center of the context may be for the burial that the skull sticking out of the edge of grave 2014-06 belongs to.
Further excavation and cleaning both in this context and in Grave 2014-06, revealed the top of a skull which may belong to the grave cut defined in the center of the context.
Pottery was counted, but accidentally mixed with 913 fine ware and cooking ware after counting. Accurate weights were not possible to take.
Later note: Kostos was correct and the skull did belong to the burial defined by the cut (944) as an early(ish) burial of Grave 2016-03 (Skeleton 961).
