Stratum:   Above reflects an attempt to describe hardened lime residue.
Description:   The soil color is light greyish white. The soil compaction is stongly cemented. The soil is very poorly sorted. It is mixed- see description.
Notes:   On 8/4/14 we decided to remove the lime residue in the lime pit in the E. side of the unexcavated baulk W. of room 5 and NW of the church narthex in unit 2. The size and hardness of the lime pieces made sieving impractical. We decided to save a box of lime pieces in case future researchers wished to chemically analyze them. This was excavated as a deposit rather than a structure because it was the result of a chemical process, not a purpose-built structure. At bottom, lime residue was approximately .81m in depty. With the removal of the lime residue, work can begin on the rest of the baulk. Only a portion of lime residue could be removed, the rest either having been removed by excavations of room 5 (NB 873, 48-49) or being covered by a tree to the north of the excavated area. The extent of lime residue is visible in the scarp and is indicated on the top plan.
