Description:   Black glazed kantharos with west slope and thorn decoration. Tall cup with moulded splayed foot, hollowed out in conical form on underside and with a deep bowl rising in conical shape to maximum diameter at zone of thorn decoration. Body curves slightly before high straight neck. Rim is outturned with a raised ridge at base. Two vertical loop handles with spurs at top are attached at base of rim and neck.
Decoration:   Black glazed inside and out in glossy glaze except part of bottom of foot. Lower body, foot on exterior and interior below neck washed with thin brown glaze. Body marked off in zones by grooves through glaze: 1 at midpoint, 1 below thorns, 1 at base neck. Groove below ridge at base rim. On upper body zone of 3 rows raised pointed conical thorns. At mid body white painted guilloche. On neck ivy tendril of broken incised wavy lines filled with white, yellow leaves, white berries, for thorns C-1947-901 C-1928-65 C-1934-2497 C-1934-259.
Material:   Dense pale pink-gray to pink-orange clay turning gray at core.
Munsell Color:   2.5yr 6/4 (light reddish brown) to 6/6 (light red)
Condition:   Complete profile. 40 joining frgts. Complete profile. Missing lower half of body, small rim, neck fts. Glaze chipped, rust stain on body.
