Title:   FRANKISH MATT-PAINTED STORAGE JAR WITH PLASTIC DECORATION

Description:   Large ovoid storage jar. Low vertical neck (H. ca. 0.22) below vertical rim (H. 0.18) with concave interior wall, rounded lip. Three vertical strap handles (W. 0.65) equidistant one from others, rising from just above maximum diameter and attached at neck. Single thin bands of clay rise from lower third of body to neck wall between handles, pinched at jar body with thumb imprints on upper surface. Body wheel-ridged. Similar to C-1995-29 (Williams and Zervos 1996, Hesperia 65, cat. 16).
Decoration:   Upper body decorated with matt-painted spirals. Spirals discontinuous but arranged in at least four rows, two below maximum diameter, one at maximum diameter, and one on shoulder. Matt-painted lip, handles decorated with horizontal brush strokes and spirals. Similar to C-1995-29 (Williams and Zervos 1996, Hesperia 65, cat. 16).
Material:   Coarse pale yellow clay with common large to very large mudstone inclusions.
Munsell Color:   2.5Y 8/2 (pale yellow)
Condition:   Fragment. Many joining frgts. (3 from context 1076, others context 1087), preserving small part of body, 2/3 neck and rim, one complete handle, and parts of other two. RIP.
