Title:   MIDDLE HELLADIC MATT-PAINTED PITHOS

Description:   Small matt-painted pithos. Aiginetan. Base flat, body ovoid; offset rim, very thick and almost flat on top with slight ridge around mouth. Two horizontal pierced lug handles attached at widest diameter. The rim is pierced by four small holes equidistant from one another. Potter's marks on base.
Decoration:   Thinnish green buff slip; decoration in black matt paint; decoration in main zone (above handles) consists of pairs of vertical bands framing a "metope"; within every other metope are two circles one above the other with a double cross in them (one panel has only one such motif); these circle panels alternate with the panels in which there is a large double line zig zag, set vertically. The panels with the circles are so set that they fall in the center of each side and over the handles. The main zone is bordered on top and on the bottom by pairs of horizontal bands. The rim has a small band around it on the outside, and on top has a sort of swag pattern, each swag consisting of two curving bands.
