Description: | Antefix attached to pentagonal cover tile and projecting well above it. Lower rectangular portion out in at base of palmette, with outer edge cut to reflect petals of palmette. Face worked in shallow relief: 7-petal palmette with straight round-tipped petals, below which semi-circular heart made as curved band, separated from drop-shaped heart. Palmette rests on 2 tendrils which rise from cross-band, curl out and up in single turn at upper corner of rectangular plaque. Beneath band is upside down lotus with points of petals extending into lower corners. In center is 3-petal palmette with short fat petals above curving heart. Slightly raised band around edge. | |
Decoration: | Painted in black and purplish-red as follows: palmette alternates B-R with central petal black; heart uncertain. Tendrils black with black stud to either side of red crossband. Red stud in center of each volute. Lotus red with black outline; lower palmette B-R-B. Frame red? Remaining surfaces reserved and slipped. Similar to FA-XXXX-17 S-XXXX-18 but not identical. | |
Material: | Coarse clay with very dense admixture of chiefly fine black inclusions, few coarser. Fired pale pinkish-buff at core to yellow surface. | |
