Collection: | | Corinth | Type: | | Object | Name: | | KN 195 | Title: | | PINAX WITH STOKER | Category: | | Minor Finds | Category Code: | | KN | Object Number: | | 195 | Description: | | Pinax with stoker(?). | Decoration: | | Black paint, fired red on one side. On obverse: stooping(?) male figure, left, holding staff(?), behind which (or part of which) is a semicircular object in outline, crossed by vertical line with short horizontal line at one end and small incised rectangle (one side missing) at other end. Slightly curved stroke of red paint at left of man probably not connected to him. Carelessly incised locks of hair. One reverse: palmette(?) and two small rosettes. The subject is uncertain; it is not even clear which way the fragment should be turned, that is, whether the subject should be stooping or upright. The style recalls that of a pinax in Berlin, which represents a potter on one side and on the other a man wielding the implement used for stoking the kiln. Possibly our figure is engaged in the occupation and ht eother lines are part of the kiln. | Material: | | Buff clay | Condition: | | Fragment. | Provenance: | | Corinth. | Findspot Description: | | Potters' Quarter.
