Type:   Object
Name:   L 2013 15
Title:   LATE ROMAN CORINTHIAN IMITATION OF ATTIC LAMP
Category Code:   L
Year:   2013
Object Number:   15
Description:   Moldmade terracotta lamp, Broneer Type XXVIII, with base almond shaped with two grooves, pear shaped body with straight flaring walls, horizontal rim, central disk with raised framing ring, kite-shaped nozzle with round wick hole, unpierced knob handle continues to base but offset at mold seam.
Decoration:   Decorative patterns difficult to discern due to poor quality of preservation and poor initial quality of the mold, which seems to have been retouched. Rim: left of handle, vegetal motif?, right of handle, geometric motif (like North African lamps)?. Handle: two transverse grooves continue down to base, top of handle has hatching between the grooves. Base: incised branch, flanked with concentric circles? (Cf. Garnett, Hesperia 44.2, fig. 1.38).
Material:   Hard, reddish gray clay with common medium to large white inclusions and some spalling, laminar to hackly breaks. Slightly lighter on base from different exposure to firing.
Munsell Color:   5YR 5/2 (reddish grey)
Condition:   Complete profile. Four fragments, joining, preserve complete profile with most of handle, body, base, and rim, half nozzle, and small part of disk.
Manufacture:   MM
Dimensions Actual:   H. to rim 0.032, H. to handle 0.043, L. 0.091, Diam. rim 0.066, Diam. base 0.049
Period:   Late Roman (5th -6th c AD)
Chronology:   Late 5th-6th (?) c. (based on almond shaped base, Karivieri1996, p. 75). Retouched Corinthian imitation of Attic lamp; too poorly manufactured and preserved to identify motifs. Fabric might be diagnostic.
