Title:   LATE ROMAN CORINTHIAN IMITATION OF ATTIC UNGLAZED LAMP

Description:   Moldmade, Broneer Type XXVIII lamp. Almond shaped base, straight flaring walls, broad rim with sloping sides, square disk with framing ridge on three sides, single central filling hole, channel to wick hole, unpierced lug handle.
Decoration:   Molded decoration indistinct, as if made from an old mold. On disk, cross formee, cut by fill hole at center. On rim, herringbone, continuing up handle. Two almond shaped grooves continuing to handle frame incised branch on base. Similar to Garnett, Hesperia 44.2, cat. 17, but lacking arcs around channel.
Material:   Hard-fired reddish yellow clay with frequent white lime inclusions, sparkling inclusions.
Munsell Color:   5YR 6/6 (reddish yellow)
Condition:   Complete profile. Four joining fragments, preserving almost complete lamp, except for small pieces missing from shoulder near handle and base. Burning around wick hole.
Manufacture:   MM
Period:   Late Roman (5th -6th c AD)
Chronology:   Middle 5th to middle 6th (Garnett, Hesperia 44.2, cat. 17). Cf. L 1982 19, found with coin of Anastasius.
