Description:   Flat, oval gem, bottom bevelled. Gem reused and mounted in metal octagon (silver highly alloyed with bronze), with inscription on reverse, meant to be used as seal.
Decoration:   In intaglio: bust of woman facing right (in cast), wearing an elaborate headdress- a roll over forehead, long curls hanging to shoulder and fillet of leaves- and sleeveless chiton. Very careful workmanship: every strand of hair indicated.
Writing:   inscribed. Engraved inscription on reverse, in Greek: K[URI]E B[OE(TH)EI] TO SO DOULO STULHANO
Material:   Carnelian, bronze.
Condition:   Complete or intact. Complete, slightly chipped on bottom.
Period:   Byzantine
Chronology:   gem Roman, setting 10th or 11th c., according to Corinth 12
