Title:   ENGRAVED CARNELIAN BEZEL FROM FINGER RING

Description:   Large flat oval gem with edges slighlty bevelled on underside. Extremely good workmanship.
Decoration:   In intaglio: Diomedes, seated, with short curly hair, nude torso with well developed musculature, and filmy scarf handing from left shoulder. To right palladion, dressed in chiton and equipped with spear, shield, and helmet. Extremely similar to two signed gems from Augustan period (Furtwangler, Antike Gemmen, pl. XLIX, nos. 1 and 2) of Dionmedes on altar holding a sword, a likely restoration here.
Mythology:   Diomedes, palladion
Material:   Carnelian.
Condition:   Fragment. Single frgt., preserving about 1/2 of two figures; missing lower half.
