Title:   TERRACOTTA DOG ON RING BASE

Description:   Terracotta mouldmade hollow dog laying in a relaxed position with lt rear leg bent and lt front leg positioned horizontal with the ground , rt foot rests on base, long shaggy vertically flowing fur covers the animal. Animal rests on a raised oval base with two parallel horizontal incised lines on front and one incised line on back. Style of fur and the composition is similar to Roman dog rattle MF88-22 (Hesperia 1989, p.11 no. 18 pl.13) and similar to the torus base of MF-10449 (Corinth XVIII.4, p. 143, 214 no. H101 pl. 33).
Decoration:   White slip in creases of fur. Pink paint seen when excavated but no longer visible.
Material:   Fine yellow clay with rare small tabular angular mudstone, frequent small tabular rounded black, few fine sparkling, and few fine tabular rounded white inclusions
Munsell Color:   Clay: 10YR 7/6 (yellow)
Condition:   Fragment. Five joining frgt., preserving lt. side of hindquarters, lt. front leg, right foot, and most of ring base. White slip found throughout piece. RIP.

Chronology:   2nd c. B.C. stylistically, later than torus base (Corinth XVIII.4 no. H101) and earlier than rattle (Hesperia 1989 no. 18) or 178-176 B.C. based on C48-130 SAH Rhodian (Fink) or 181-173 B.C. based on a coin of Cleopatra I found in the Well XIX.
