Description:   Large-scale portrait of beardless man with short hair. Hair lies flat aginst head, surface covered with short, shallow curls; unevenly spaced little chunks over forehead, very short sideburns curl forward from ears; sides and back of head carelessly finished. Forehead low and jutting with 4 swells above narrow, deepset eyes, deeply hollowed out under brow; very thick upper lids, lower lids emphasized by deep crease; frown lines and wrinkles at corners of eyes, eyebrows lightly incised. Prominent cheek and jaw bones; hint of folds framing nose. Nose springs from high bridge; mouth narrow and full. Surface of face carefully smoothed. Ears poorly carved and badly placed. A large deep rectangular hole L00.07 W00.03 Depth00.055, at back of head, possibly for brace. Back of neck flat, roughly finished with point. Originally inserted into torso.
Material:   White fine-crystalled marble
Condition:   Fragment. Head and neck; front of neck sheared off; chin, tip of nose, rims of ears broken; face, hair chipped. Surface worn, stained.
