Description:   Life-sized head, apparently worked in the round.High forehead. Hair parted in center, curving outto row of fat spiral locks; first curls to either side of part small, making a kind of ogival arch in center of forehead; curls graduated in size toward side of head, all curling clockwise, with shallowripples in surface. Wears dentate stephane, held by broad flat band or fillet, surface of which cut into head; fillet pierced by holes D00.01, Depth00.021,spaced 00.018-00.026 m. apart; 5 preserved to properlt. of part, 2 to rt., 2nd to lt. preserves solidterracotta stem. Holes slant down from back to front.Fillet widens from front to back. Above, stephane curves out and up, ending in triangular teeth. Topsurface roughly trimmed with flat chisel, scratched linescontinuing lines of V-shaped channels.
Decoration:   Traces of fine white stucco on face. Deep red or violet brown paint on hair, dentate stephane and faint traces on fillet. Top of head not stuccoedor painted.
Mythology:   Gorgon ? Sphinx ?
Material:   Fine gray oolitic limestone.
Condition:   Fragment. Single frgt., preserving forehead to top of head, with small portion of rt. side, left side to nearly back of head; most stephane tipsbroken away; surface abraded, paint worn.
