Description:   A small-scale bust of Sarapis; originally wore narrow kalathos resting on crown; hair arranged in longlish locks: a fringe of 5 locks, swinging to lt. frame forehead, above which 2 springing locks, curling in opposite directions; curls frame the face on either side; in back a line, as if from a fillet, makes an indentation at ca. nose height, below which 2 rows of locks curling in different directions. Low straight forehead, sharp brow ridges, deeply set horizontal eyes; small hole for pupil. Mouth framed by long downturned moustache; dense curly beard, with part down center, row of curls to either side in a vertical row, irregular ones to either side. In back have a narrow band from drapery (?), finished edge below. On underside have a part of the surface to proper lt. of pedestal support.
Decoration:   Red paint preserved in juncture of hair with face, on eyeball, around lids, in beard. Traces of gold leaf over red in beard.
Mythology:   Serapis
Material:   Coarse-crystalled white marble, laminating fractures.
Condition:   Fragment. Single frgt., complete head except for top, where kalathos broken away; part of tenon preserved on underside; front of chest and shoulders missing. Paint faintly preserved.
