Description:   Statuette of Dionysos, standing with weight on lt. leg, throwing lt. hip out, rt. flexed, foot back and turned out 45 degrees, heel raised. Head turned 3/4 rt., shoulders level, rt. arm at side, left resting on tree support, with hand flexed. Long hair pulled back into a knot at nape of neck, bound by strophion, with large wavy clumps (wreath ?) framing face; long lock hanging over and along either shoulder. Heart-shaped face with broad low forehead, sharp brows, long narrow, horizontal eyes with very heavy upper lids, straight nose, flaring nostrils, small mouth tilted up to rt., with lips together, pointed chin. Soft youthful body, nude except for painted fawn skin, sloping shoulders, chest thrown forward, small pectorals, long slender legs. Wears half-boots with folded flaps, toes exposed; rectangular strut at top of rt. hip to anchor rt. arm. Lt. forearm rests on tree, either drapery wrapped around upper half, or heavy tendril (?) with clump of grapes at mid height; a fish (?) in high relief, head down, outlined by drill against lower half of trunk. To proper rt. a crouching panther with rt. foreleg raised, head tilted up, hind quarters not well defined from plinth. Plinth roughly rectangular, thicker at back than front; top roughly picked, front worked with rasp, sides with point, back with long oblique strokes of point. Dionysos' skin lightly polished; drill in corners of eyes, ear, behind long locks, outlining features on tree, and separating forelegs from background; flat chisel on tree.
Decoration:   Dionysos wears a red painted fawn skin diagonally from rt. shoulder across chest to waist with legs hanging down over hips. Red paint in hair, on tree.

Material:   Fine-crystalled white marble, now blackened.
Condition:   Missing parts. Numerous joining frgts., preserving complete except for right arm below deltoid, lt. elbow, lt. hand, large chip in upper lt. thigh, thin slice below rt. Knee; muzzle of panther, chip in rt. Hindquarters, chips in tree trunk; a few holes in plinth.
