Description: | Sphinx, seated on haunches, head turned obliquely out over right shoulder. Hair falls down back and over left shoulder in series of horizontal waves. Wings curve out and back towards head. Three sets of feathers, each stepped slightly behind plane of preceding. Row of shallow drilled dots on mid-wing, each side, D. 0.004-0.005 m. Area between wings cut as shallow trough between scalloped tips. At apex a squared cutting 0.03 by 0.04 m. by 0.03 m. deep. A circular behind forelegs, with traces of iron rust. Spine a sloping ridge ending in tail stub. Tail originally curved under rear and up along rt. haunch. NOTE ON FINDING: According to Richter, Archaic Gravestones, back of head from Byzantine well. No mention of this in original findbook entry. Hair entered there in E. Capp' Jr.'s hand. | |
