Title:   LIFE-SIZED STATUE OF ATHENA
Category:   Sculpture
Category Code:   S
Object Number:   2335
Description:   Slightly over life-seize figure of Athena wearing chiton, peplos, mantle and aegis. Right leg weight-bearing, left leg bent at knee with lower leg brought slightly behind and to the side. Left arm originally doweled into place and raised out to side (perhaps with a spear ?) Right arm down at side, traces of lower arm preserved on apoptygma of peplos indicates that it was bent slightly forward from the elbow and right hand probably grasped end of the mantle. She wears a chiton of which three buttons of the right sleeve, with shallow radiating folds, are preserved. Over this is a peplos, belted with a cord which is knotted at the center; traces of its ends visible on the overfall. Edge of overfall extends just below the hips at the sides and is slightly higher at the center. The peplos' thick, columnar folds with deep channels obscure the right leg while its material is pulled tightly around the left leg. Over the peplos is a mantle which is draped over the left shoulder, hangs diagonally across the back and is pulled up towards missing right hip. Mantle falls in heavy U-shaped folds over left shoulder; in back it falls to just below knees and is drawn tightly in broad, rather flat folds, defined by sharp edges. Probably holds edge of mantle in right hand. Wears an aegis, which is a variation of the Parthenos type with two "flaps" brought from the back over the shoulders and covering the breasts. The flaps are joined with a Gorgoneion W. 0.092 m. between breasts; framed by two snakes, interwined under chin; traces of their ends barely visible. The tails of the lower snakes of the two flaps turn back on themselves at the juncture of the flaps. On the front the surface of the aegis is decorated with lightly incised feathers, some of which have central quills indicated but only on proper left side. Surface of back of aegis only roughly worked. Rasp marks visible on ca. all of figure's surface.
