Title:   MARBLE RELIEF WITH MAENAD
Category:   Sculpture
Category Code:   S
Object Number:   2597
Description:   Rectangular slab, decorated in relief with draped female. Figure twisted so that face and hips are in profile to proper left, upper back and shoulders almsot frontal; left arm outstretched behind figure, right arm would have been outstretched to front. Head thrown back; hair parted in middle, with parallel wavy locks over crown, and a roll of waves framing face, pulled back behind ears, tied by a cord, with thick wavy locks falling over either shoulder. Preserved outer corner of eye shows that upper lid overlaps lower, eyebrow not articulated. Upper part of ear covered by hair. Wears a disc earring lightly incised with a "splintered rosette". Wears a thin, transparent chiton with buttoned sleeves; left sleeve billows out behind arm with tubular folds. Chiton over the buttocks and hips clearly reveals the figure beneath. The few folds here are shallow or barely rendered by incised lines; these fall diagonally behind the figure as do the more deeply carved folds of the material which is blown out behind the figure. Fain traces of rasping on surfaces. For discussion of so-called Kallimachos Maenads, cf. Piraeus Reliefs, Stephanidou-Tiveriou, Neo-attika, nos 54-55.
Material:   Fine-crystalled white marble with a few gray streaks and larger calcite crystals.
Condition:   Fragment. Two joining fragments, preserving part of top and left unfinished edges, single figure from head to top of thigh. Missing: left hand at wrist, right arm below shoulder, large portion of torso; profile of face damaged.
