Title:   SARCOPHAGUS RELIEF DEPICTING AMAZONOMACHY
Category:   Sculpture
Category Code:   S
Object Number:   2721
Description:   The description goes from the top down. Egg-and-dart moulding; astragal; an irregular bevelling (instead of taenia) at the top of the relief. The relief on the long side: In the middle, an Amazon on a rearing horse, right; she wears a short chiton and boots with triangular flaps. Her left arm disappears behind the horse's neck; the pelta on the right side of the horse's neck is understood, logically but not visually, as held in her left hand. The pelta is done in crude incision with little or no relief; it looks like an afterthought. The angle of the break and the Amazon's pose suggest that her missing right arm had been drawn back to hurl a spear at the warrior collapsing beneath the forelegs of the horse. He is naked, armed in helmet and shield, which is held high by the left hand, uselessly framing the head of the warrior it ought to be protecting. The warrior's right hand is against his chest. His legs disappear from the composition in two different ways; his left leg theoretically penetrates the plane of the marble background, while the right leg vanishes into foreground space, largely occupied by the hindhooves of the horse. On the right, remains of a third figure, advancing right. At the left corner, a fourth figure in long drapery with a Corinthian helmet at its feet. Below the relief, a Lesbian kymation and a guilloche moulding. At the lower left corner, a pouncing dog, right. The reliefs on the narrow side which is, at present, very close to the wall are not identified here except for the running animal, perhaps a second dog, in the lower right hand corner below the main relief field.
