Description:   Head of portrait of older bearded man; c. life-size; wears headdress consisting of thick, rolled fillet crowned by a tall, layered myrtle (?) wreath; consists of 4 horizontal rows of stylized leaves; headdress is flat on top; crown of head finished roughly with punch; intense, serious expression; forehead creased with three long horizontal grooves; vertical lines and deep horizontal crease between eyes; eyes deeply set, almond-shaped; eyebrows protrude sharply; irises engraved; pupils carved in shape of pelta; lower edge of pupil touches lower eyelid; inner corners of eyes lightly drilled; cheeks carefully modelled; nose originally had pronounced outward curve; hair over center forehead is thin and flat, carved in shallow relief with chisel; on either side of forehead, high-relief crescent-shaped locks curling downward (cut with chisel); drill in curls over temples and along cheeks and in beard; thick moustache of narrow parallel strands covers upper lip; back of head unfinished and roughly worked with point; rasp marks on fillet; flesh surfaces carefully smoothed; closest sytlistic parallel from Sardis.

Condition:   Fragment. Frgt., preserving head of statue, from top of headdress to mouth; chin and lower part of beard lacking; ears, tip of nose; eyebrows chipped; blackened in areas; area on r. side of crown repaired in antiquity.
