Description:   Stirrup jar with flat bottom, nearly globular body with max. diam. just above median, lower body straight flaring; top of shoulder flattened around base of narrow conical neck, wide flat stopper D00.095. Two vertical handles, flattened oval in section, attached to upper shoulder, stopper. Wide spout, rising at steep angle from shoulder, rolled rim. From Blegen's text: "A large stirrup vase with flat base, regular oval body and a relatively enormous spout. The shape is quite different from that found at the Potter's Shop and by no means so pleasing. The body is more elongated, the stirrup handle is higher, and the spout relatively much larger."
Decoration:   Possible thin cream slip on surface ? (or salts?)Groups of three red-brown glaze bands below and above median on body. On shoulder, side A, wavy line,ending in loop around handle stump to side of spout.Circle around base, top of spout. Circle at base ofneck, second around circumference of stopper, singleband across stopper not quite on axis of two facesof jar. From Blegen's text: "The decoration is simple, consisting of the familiar horzontal belts of lines and in the upper zone, thus marked off, a broad serpentine band running around the vase. The handles bear parallel lines along each edge, and on the disk two broad bands form a rude cross within a circle; while the base and rim of the spout are also marked with a band." And in footnote: "Bands on the body seem to have been painted while the pot was revolving on the wheel"
Material:   Fine orange clay with rare lime inclusions, clay fired buff at surface, with 4 bright orange spots.
Munsell Color:   Between 2.5YR 6/6 and 5YR 6/6
Condition:   Complete profile. Ca. 34 joining frgts., complete profile; half bottom, 1/3 body to H00.125, nearly all upper body, shoulder; all neck, stopper, both handles except for small part of one at base, all spout.
