Abstract:   The single most salient characteristic of the blocks belonging to the early temples at Corinth and Isthmia is the presence of rope channels on two or more of their surfaces. The purpose of these channels has been thought to be the facilitation of the removal of the ropes used in lifting the blocks into place. In the published reconstruction of the Isthmia temple, the function of certain blocks has been identified on the basis of such an interpretation. It is now clear that this interpretation is incorrect and that the channels performed some function in an earlier stage of the construction process, most probably in the quarrying and transport of the building blocks.
