| Abstract: | This article is a synthetic discussion of the Neolithic through Hellenistic phases of the Panayia Field excavated by the American School of Classical Studies between 1995 and 2007. The Late Neolithic to Early Helladic II periods are represented by pottery and other finds from a layer of alluvium that was deposited across the site. Four Early and Middle Geometric tombs, three with monolithic limestone sarcophagi, offer evidence for the earliest known achievements of Corinthian stonemasons. Finds from the Archaic and Classical periods are more ephemeral, but suggest that part of the area was given over to memorial services for the dead. During the Hellenistic period, the Panayia Field was a residential and industrial area. | |
